1st Choice is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented  Federal Paralegal I  to support a  Federal Law Enforcement agency in  Portland, Maine. The contractor must possess essential qualifications including integrity, initiative, dependability, good judgment, and an ability to work cooperatively with others.

Duties and Responsibilities:

A Paralegal I performs but is not limited to the following duties:
  • Process evidence in various databases.
  • Assist attorneys in trial preparation.
  • Provide Apprentice examination of legal instruments.
  • Review legal instruments (completeness of information, proper execution).
  • Conduct research and obtain additional information related to specific cases.
  • Determine correctness of action (per Government regulations, procedures, etc.).
  • Research records (to ascertain conditions that might preclude action).
  • Provide assistance on instruments.
  • Provide information on instruments.
  • Gather facts for cases and routine reports.
  • Perform initial review of petitions.
  • Verify citations and legal references on legal documents.
  • Proficiency with numerous software including IPRO, CASEMAP, QUICKBOOKS, and MICROSOFT SUITE.

WORK SCHEDULE: Full-Time; Monday-Friday 8:00AM- 5:00PM EST

Education Requirements:

  • Minimum Requirement: Two-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field such as paralegal studies, legal studies, or criminal justice.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in paralegal studies, legal studies, or a related field.


Experience Requirements:

  • Proven Experience in Legal Support: Minimum of one year of experience as a paralegal or in a related legal support role. Experience should demonstrate proficiency in legal research, document preparation, case management, and interaction with attorneys and clients.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong computer skills and experience with legal software such as IPRO, CaseMap, and other databases. Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and QuickBooks is essential.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in handling legal documents, evidence, and data entry.
  • Research Skills: Ability to conduct legal research using online databases and other resources, analyze legal issues, and summarize findings.
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent organizational skills for managing case files, deadlines, and multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Communication Skills: Effective oral and written communication skills for interacting with attorneys, clients, and other legal professionals.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with attorneys and other legal staff in a fast-paced environment.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and assignments.
  • U.S. Citizenship and Background Investigation: Due to the sensitive nature of the work, candidates must be U.S. citizens and successfully complete a 7 (or 10) year minimum background investigation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a U.S. Attorney's Office: Prior experience working in a U.S. Attorney's office or similar government agency is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Federal Law and Procedures: Familiarity with federal law, court procedures, and legal terminology is a plus.
